What's Happening in Central Alberta this Weekend

Red Deer is buzzing with excitement this weekend, offering a variety of activities that guarantee fun for the whole family. From exciting events to relaxing outings, there's plenty to enjoy in Red Deer this weekend!

1. Centrefest

Where: Downtown Red Deer on Ross Street and Little Gaetz Ave

When: July 27 & 28, 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm  

Get ready for a weekend of awe-inspiring performances and family fun at Centrefest! This annual festival features a variety of acts, including juggling, acrobatics, fire breathing, and comedy. Explore street performers, Circus World, Water World, a street market, food vendors, and roving entertainment. The event is open to the public, and entry is by donation to support the festival and its performers. Performances follow the “pass the hat” tradition, so bring your toonies and bills to show your support—don’t worry, you can also grab change at the Change Exchange tent.  

Public street parking is FREE on Saturdays and Sundays. And with the heat we've been experiencing, remember to pack sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, water, and comfortable footwear. We also recommend bringing a folding chair for extra comfort.

2. Battle of The Buskers - Presented by Centrefest & Troubled Monk

Where: Bo's Bar and Stage, 2310 50 Ave, Red Deer, AB

When: July 26, 6:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Prepare for an evening of excitement as international street performers battle it out to become the 2024 International Champion! As a Battle of the Buskers attendee, you help decide the winner! Enjoy an evening of world-class talent from Mexico, Ghana, Australia, the USA, Japan, and Canada. A welcome cocktail, served between 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm, is included with your ticket purchase.

Proudly supported by Troubled Monk and Bo's Bar and Stage, this event promises an unforgettable night of entertainment!

Battle of the Buskers

3. Bard on Bower Festival

Get ready for a weekend of Shakespeare at the Bard on Bower Festival! Enjoy a dose of comedy and drama with two fantastic shows.

The Merry Wives of Windsor – Bard on Bower Festival – Outdoor Show

Where: Bower Ponds Stage, 4715 Fountain Drive, Red Deer, AB

When: July 27, 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm & 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm

July 28, 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm

First, enjoy an outdoor show at the Bower Ponds Stage for a lively performance of The Merry Wives of Windsor. Watch as the roguish Sir John Falstaff attempts to win the hearts—and wallets—of two clever housewives, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page, who turn the tables on him with wit and charm. With multiple shows throughout the weekend, this romantic comedy promises fun, laughter, and a celebration of friendship and miscommunication.  

Admission is free, with donations warmly welcomed. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy an outdoor show!  

Henry IV Part 2 – Indoor Show  

Where: Scott Block Theatre – 4816 – 50 Avenue, Red Deer AB

When: July 27, 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm  

For a more intimate experience, step inside the Scott Block Theatre for a performance of Henry IV Part 2. This adaptation of the classic tale delves into themes of legacy, truth, and the complexities of growing up and growing old. Follow Prince Hal as he faces a crucial decision between following his father’s path or heeding the humorous advice of Sir John Falstaff.

The Bard on Bower Festival

4. Bootlegger Brisket Dinner

Where: DNA Gardens, 35344 Range Rd 230 Elnora AB

When: July 26, 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm  

Enjoy an evening on the farm at DNA Garden’s Bootlegger Brisket event! Enjoy a slow-cooked smoked brisket, roasted vegetables, fresh bread, and their renowned Saskatoon pie as you soak up their charming farm atmosphere. Your ticket includes a complimentary drink — choose from house-made fruit wines, local craft beer, or a non-alcoholic option.

This high-energy event promises an unforgettable experience with thrilling motorcycle stunts, freestyle motocross, and bikes, all set in a lively atmosphere filled with food, tattoos, and vendors. Hosted by ODIN MFG and Gasoline Alley Harley-Davidson, this year’s Git Down features the electrifying sounds of Della Crew, ensuring a night of great music and adrenaline-fueled excitement!

6. Summer Sun Prints & Yoga

Where: Fort Normandeau, 28054 B, Township Rd 382, Red Deer County  

When:  July 27, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm  

Celebrate summer with creativity and relaxation at Summer Sun Prints & Yoga this Saturday at Fort Normandeau. Get hands-on with sun printing as you design your own tote bag using natural materials with guidance from their guest, Audrey. Once your designs are in the sun, take a moment to unwind with a soothing yoga session by the river. All materials are included, and everyone is welcome to join in.

Bring a stuffed animal, a picnic, and a smile to the 2nd Annual A.L.W.A.Y.S. Companion Animal Rescue Teddy Bear Picnic at Sunnybrook Farm Museum! For $5 per person or $15 per family, enjoy a day filled with face painting, train rides, live music, and bubbles. Explore creative fun at the craft and colouring stations, capture cute moments at the selfie station, and get lost in delightful stories at the Story Corner.
