What’s Happening this Weekend | February 4-6

The Red Deer Arts Council
presents  First Friday, February 4th, so why not join the galleries downtown Red Deer in celebration of our local, regional, and national artistic talent. Here are a few of the Galleries hosting opening receptions where you will get the chance to meet the artist or go on an informal tour.

Rhythm and Hues, optical and geometric abstractions by Peter Caden, are on display at The Viewpoint Gallery in the City of Red Deer’s Arts and Culture Services Centre at 5205-48th Ave. The gallery hours have been extended till 8:00 pm this Friday and the artist will be in attendance. Peter Caden will share some of his inspirations and the process starting at 6:30 pm.  

Head down to the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery and see the exhibit “Ya Ha Tinda - The Ranch: Photography by Arto Djerdjerian” as part of First Fridays Red Deer. There will be an opening reception from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and informal tours will also be available.

BPV Art’s exhibit “It All Equals Now” is hosting a First Friday reception at the Velvet Olive Lounge from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. There is no good, there is no bad. There is no right, there is no wrong. Can't change the past, you can only choose tomorrow. Energy moving through time and It All Equals Now. Make sure you check it out.

At Riverlands Studio, take in “Spotlight on Marlene Kallstrom-Barritt: Ascending, artists Carol Lynn Gilchrist, ASA and Guest Marlene Kallstrom-Barritt. The date of the Exhibition is February 1-25 with a First Friday reception to be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Kerry Wood Nature Centre


‍The Kerry Wood Nature
would like to kick off the Year of the Garden with their Snowshoeing Adventure Time on February 5 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Head out with your family or on your own for a snowshoe adventure in the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary! Enjoy this unique way of seeing wildlife within the city limits. Whether you’re a beginner or an avid snowshoer, the Sanctuary is a gorgeous place to have some fun and test out our recreational snowshoes. They're also taking family game night up a notch by providing drop-in games of all shapes and sizes with a nature theme this Sunday from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Outdoor Fun at Sylvan Lake


Sylvan Lake Recreation and Visit Sylvan Lake are hosting a free Family Skating & Sledding Party this Sunday from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Leader field at Lakeway BLVD and Memorial Trail. You will have a chance to mingle with the characters of Frozen while enjoying hot chocolate and smores by the firepit. If you are able donations to the food bank would be much appreciated.

Gasoline Alley Farmers’ Market

Gasoline Alley Farmers’ Market is Central Alberta’s indoor and year-round farmers’ market, located on the intersection of Laura Avenue and Lantern Street in Gasoline Alley. The market is open every Friday & Saturday from 9am – 5pm and every Sunday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm, all year long! As an Alberta approved market, 80% of all products sold at the market are made, baked, and grown in Alberta. Kick back, relax and grab a beer, coffee or a bite to eat in the Market Kitchen where you will find five restaurants, a craft brewery and coffee shop! The Market Kitchen is open every Thursday to Sunday.  When the market is closed, you can access the Market Kitchen through the glass doors at the north end of the building.


Parkland Garden Centre


Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, so come on down to the Parkland Nurseries and Garden Centre this weekend for your Valentine’s photos with your family, kids or pets. The cost is $30.00, and you must pre-book by calling 403-346-5613 or email events@parklandgc.ca to reserve your slot. Beautiful staging is provided by Opal & Onyx Occasions and all proceeds will go to the Canadian Mental Health Association.
