About the Troubled Monk Brewery

Troubled Monk first opened its doors on June 12, 2015, and poured the first ceremonial pint of their 15-barrel brew. They are located in the heart of Malt Barley County, otherwise known as Red Deer, Alberta. 

Troubled Monk goes to great lengths to source as many of its four key ingredients from Alberta as possible, but they also get their hops from Europe, New Zealand, and the US.

Built around a 15-barrel brewhouse, the brewery only uses filtered Red Deer water and has recently added a 500-litre still to help with production. 

Due to its prime location Capstone, this brewery is close to the trail system that connects every neighbourhood in the city. Enjoy unique huts on the patio in summer complete with cornhole games and enjoy a family-friendly environment.

How Troubled Monk Got Its Name 

The name Troubled Monk is a nod to the spirit of creative restlessness and constant experimentation that dares the brewery. Their story reflects this perfectly: 

“A monk sits, furiously scratching away at his parchment.

It is near dawn and his candles have burnt down to nearly nothing. Still, he cannot rest until he’s finished. 

He won’t rest.

Open jars of grains surround him, some spilled next to his parchment.

He runs his hands through them before bringing them to his nose.

He smiles as he lifts his parchment into the light. After countless experiments, this is it. The perfect recipe. 

A beer fine enough to share. This Monk isn’t your typical devotee.

He has an unmatched passion for his craft and the will to go anywhere to find the right ingredients.

And tonight, his devotion to his craft has paid off.

The trouble is, he will never stop searching for the next perfect recipe…”

The Troubled Monk Selection

Troubled Monk crafts and serves delicious brews and ships across Alberta and neighbouring provinces. Their vast selection of beers, sodas and drinks ensures there’s something to suit every taste. 

Their year-round selection features ales, lagers, IPAs, sodas, cocktails, and a hard iced tea. However, you can also check out the seasonal selection, which changes every few months and features a delicious new beverage.

If you prefer spirits, you can check out the Adequate Vodka, Epitaph Gin, or the Grainhenge Whisky, all made in-house. Their other products and brands include Troubled Tea and Soda.
