From watching a game at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup to enjoying fireworks at Bower Ponds, there is plenty to do this August long weekend.

What’s Happening this Weekend | July 29 – August 1, 2022

1. The Hlinka Gretzky Cup starts this weekend in Red Deer. The games start on Sunday, July 31, and go on until Saturday, August 6. Hosted in partnership with the Red Deer Rebels, the 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, presented by RAM, will be at the Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer, marking the first time the best-on-best tournament has been hosted in Canada by one community. Since its inception in 1991, the event has featured premier under-18 players from some of the world’s greatest hockey nations and has seen Canada win a tournament-record 22 gold medals. 2. The Town of Penhold is excited to announce they will be hosting a pre-tournament game between Germany and Switzerland for the Hlinka Gretzky Cup on Friday, July 29, 2022 at 6:00 pm in the Penhold Regional Multiplex. There will also be a Tail Gate party in the Multiplex Parking Lot starting at 4:30 pm For $10.00 / vehicle, hockey fans can come early and enjoy live music, and food vendors and get their faces painted to show which team they will be cheering for the during the game.

3. Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society has re-scheduled their Canada Day fireworks to Heritage Day on Monday, August 1. Join them at Bower Ponds, the show starts at 10:30 pm, weather permitting.

4. Capstone is hosting a Fireworks Watch Party. Come on down to Canada 150 Square on Monday, August 1st to watch the fireworks from Bower Ponds at 10:30 pm. Enjoy live music from Gibbs and Gilly from 8:00 pm-10:30 pm. The Red Deer Food Bank food truck will also be there serving up delicious food from 7:30 pm – 11:00 pm/later. They will also have their new Discovery Bus on display from noon to 11:00 pm that day.   

5. Food Truck Friday at Capstone this Friday, July 29 from 11 am – 2:00 pm. Come enjoy a delicious lunch during Food Truck Friday at Capstone. This is a great location with places to sit to enjoy your food and paths to walk with beautiful views of the Red Deer River.

6. Parkland Garden Centre is hosting Coffee with Friends at Parkland Gardens on Friday, July 29-Sunday, July 31 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Celebrate the Year of the Garden 2022 at Parkland Garden Center. Buy a coffee and receive $1.00 off a coffee for a friend. Stroll through the display gardens and explore the beautiful gift shop.

7. Summer Outdoor Market at Gasoline Alleys Farmers Market is this Saturday, July 30 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. This summer they are expanding the market outdoors through June, July, and August. Stop by to see their new vendors.  

8. Check out the Ross Street Patio Performances sometime this summer, the Patio features free, live music for the Summer and early Fall season. Wednesday performances are from 4:30 – 6:30 pm, and Thursday's & Friday's 12:00 pm -1:30 pm. They are proudly featuring talented local musicians and bands that contribute to the amazing atmosphere you will find on the beloved Patio.

9. Summer Outdoor Market at Gasoline Alleys Farmers Market is on Saturday, July 30 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. This summer they are expanding the market outdoors through June, July, and August. The Summer Outdoor Market will take place every Saturday afternoon from 1:00- 4:00 pm. Stop by to see their new vendors. Join them for a Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, July 24 from 10:00 am – noon in celebration of Westerner Days. This is the last day of the fair and it is 33Family Day, so bring the whole crew along for Pancake Breakfast before you head on over! Pancake Breakfast is free, while supplies last. It will be first come, first served.

10. The Track on 2 has their Sunday Race, Post time is 1:10 pm. Enjoy the excitement and bet on the live horse racing (over 18). Attendance and parking are free, and all ages are welcome. They are family-friendly and have stick horse races, games, and other activities for the kids.
