What is happening this weekend, December 17 - 19, 2021

World Junior Skate Day at Bower Ponds this Saturday from 3 pm to 5 pm in honour of the IIHF coming to Red Deer. There will be a learn-to-skate area, hot chocolate,and other fun surprises.

Alberta Sports Hall of Fame is the place to be this Sunday, December 19.The World Junior Hockey Trophy will tour its way to the Hall and be on display from 12 pm to 3 pm. You can also enter for a pair of Hockey Tickets to the World Juniors in Red Deer, happening December 26 to January 3.

World Junior Hockey is here, and Team Canada will be playing against Switzerland at the Peavey Mart Centrium this Sunday for a pre-tournament game before heading off to Edmonton. Red Deer will feature 9 of the 10 teams in the pre-tournament from December 19 to 23. For more information and tickets for these games, go to Tickets Alberta.

This Friday, Cranna Lake will be set aglow with a spectacular fireworks display against a wintry night backdrop as part of the Light up the Night celebrations.

It is the last weekend for Santa and his number one elf to cruise through town on a Red Deer Transit Bus starting at 5:45 pm as part of Red Deer Lights the Night. They will hit Route 3 on Friday and Route 4 on Saturday, so make sure you head outside and give them a Red Deerian cheer as they head past. Route Map.

It will be Christmas all week at the Gasoline Alley's Indoor Farmers Market starting this Friday, December 17 to 23. They are planning a whole lineup of fun activities from an Ugly Sweater Day to Live Ice Carving and so much more. Santa will also be visiting the market from December 19 to 21 from 1 pm to 3 pm, so make sure you come on down and join in the festive fun.

Art in the Garden Christmas Market is happening at Parkland Garden Centre Sunday, December 19, from 11 am to 4 pm. Bring the whole family to enjoy live music, unique items and view the Grand ice Sculptures unveiled for the public to view. It's the last weekend for the Holiday Markets, so make sure you don't forget anyone on your list and shop local.

Join us at the Red Deer Polytechnic Arts Centre this December as young dancers from across Central Alberta entertain you with the world's favourite ballet, The Nutcracker. Toy Soldiers battling rats, a journey to a far-off land, sugar plum fairies, angels, and sweets from around the world, all this and more can be expected as you dive into the beauty of this performance happening December 17 to 19. There are two performances Friday and Saturday and one on Sunday.

Although the CP Holiday Train won't be running in your neighbourhood this year, you can still watch a virtual performance. Canadian Music Hall-of-Famer Steven Page and The Strumbellas will lead an all-star cast of performers aboard the CP Holiday Train for the 2021 "Holiday Train at Home" concert. The concert will be streamed on Facebook, YouTube and www.cpr.ca/holidaytrain on Saturday, December 18, at 6 pm MT/8 p.m. ET.
