What’s Happening in Central Alberta Canada Day Long Weekend?

Central Alberta Celebrates Canada's 157th Birthday

Canada Day in Red Deer is shaping up to be a spectacular celebration filled with activities and events for everyone to enjoy. As the community comes together to honor the nation's 157th birthday, Red Deer promises a day brimming with live music, family-friendly activities, and breathtaking fireworks. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor, there's no shortage of festivities to partake in and memories to create. Join us as we dive into the exciting lineup of events happening throughout the city, ensuring a Canada Day celebration to remember.

Canada Day at Bower Ponds

1. Bower Ponds is the heart of Red Deer's Canada Day celebrations. Hosted by the Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society, Canada Day at Bower Ponds takes place on July 1st from 11 a.m. to midnight, offering free admission for all.

Schedule of the days activities:

The outdoor stage will come alive with local dance groups and singers performing from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.  

Visitors can enjoy a diverse array of food booths featuring cuisine from the Philippines, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Armenia, African Caribbean, and Francophone cultures.

Evening entertainment kicks off at 6 p.m. with the Central AB Filipino Musicians Association, followed by performances from Tap 9 at 7:15 p.m., THE INTANGIBLES at 8:35 p.m., and Trent Agecoutay at 9:50 p.m.  

The day will culminate in a spectacular fireworks display at 11:00 p.m.

*Please note that pets are not allowed at the event, and there will be no parking available at the park.  

Bo's Bar & Stage

2. Get ready for an unforgettable Canada Day weekend party on Sunday, June 30, at 8:00 p.m. at Bo’s Bar and Stage. The night will feature live music from Face the Earth and Arcana Kings, leading up to a show-stopping performance by the legendary, award-winning Canadian band, The Trews, from Nova Scotia. Penhold Canada Day Celebrations

3. Join the town of Penhold for a fun family friendly Canada Day celebration, Monday July 1, 2024, from 8:30am – 11:30am. There will be a pancake breakfast (cash only!), mini golf, face painting, balloon artist and games! Click here for more information.

Kerry Wood Nature Centre

4. Believe it or not, there's another BIG birthday in town! Join the party for the 100th birthday Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary, Alberta's oldest federal migratory bird sanctuary! Set on 122 hectares (almost 300 acres) of protected land within city limits, this special place has been a part of our lives and our city for decades. A local favourite for school field trips, family walks, bird and wildlife enthusiasts. The celebration takes place June 27 from 4:00pm - 8:00pm and parking is very limited! Attendees are encouraged to attend via our beautiful trail system on bike, scooter or a lovely walk.

Rocky Mountain House

5. Celebrate Canada Day at the Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site, Monday, July 1st from 12:00 - 6:00pm. Enjoy a community celebration with wagon rides, face painting, axe throwing, a toonie carnival, live music, and so much more. It's the perfect day out for the whole family! Ross Street Patio

6. Kickoff the long weekend by catching Red Deer’s finest local musicians and bands Friday, June 28th from 12:00 – 1:30 on the Ross Street Patio. The patio is lined with unique and local restaurants for you to explore and discover why the Ross Street Patio is one of Red Deer's favourite gathering places and Alberta's first Entertainment District. Red Deer Resort & Casino

7. From the banks of the Maritimes, country-pop sensation Craig Silver will perform at the Red Deer Resort and Casino for a FREE concert this Saturday, June 29, 2024. For more information on the Red Deer Resort and Casino’s hours and location, click here.

Heritage Ranch

8. Celebrate July 1st with a family friendly drive-in movie. Enjoy the movie Top Gun on holiday Monday at Heritage Ranch with horses grazing quietly in the background as your backdrop. Click here for more information.
