Enjoying the Outdoors: Part 4 - Snowshoeing in Red Deer

There was a time when snow-shoeing skills were a necessity for many people in Canada.

There was a time when snow-shoeing skills were a necessity for many people in Canada. This was particularly true for trappers, fur traders and anyone whose livelihood depended upon the ability to get around in deep snow. Today it is less of a necessity and more of a recreational endeavour for most people. Walker, runners and many outdoor enthusiasts turn to snowshoes during the winter as a means to challenge their routines, and to add a little adventure to their outdoor explorations.

Red Deer's vast parks and trails system have many areas that can accommodate those with an adventurous lust to tread the path less travelled.

Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary is set on almost 122 hectares of land within the city of Red Deer and is one area where snowshoers love to explore. As a protected federal migratory bird sanctuary, skiing, jogging, cycling and pets are not allowed. Which in turn provides a more peaceful setting with ample opportunities to observe wildlife.

The Kerry Wood Nature Centre provides snowshoe rentals and offers family Snowshoeing Adventure Time on various Sundays for those wanting to try out this winter activity.

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame also provides snowshoe rentals for both adults, youth and children at $5 an hour or $12 for all day. The trails of Heritage Ranch await your exploration just behind their building and is the perfect location to start your winter trek. You might even luck out and spot a horse-drawn sleigh or two as they carry like-minded explorers over the snow-covered fields. To reserve please call them at 403-341-8614 and enjoy the trails here and beyond for some affordable family fun.

The Riverbend Golf & Recreation Area is a premier Nordic sports centre for cross-country skiers and has ample space for the snowshoe enthusiast to spend the day as well.

The places you can venture around Red Deer are plentiful with the versatility snowshoes offer, where will your snowshoes take you as you Explore Red Deer’s Backyard?
