With “Bike to Work Day” coming up in May, it is time to get those bikes out of storage, tuned up and ready to hit the trails.

With “Bike to Work Day” coming up in May, it is time to get those bikes out of storage, tuned up and ready to hit the trails.

Many of our trails are multi-purpose, so there are times they can be rather busy with a mix of walkers, runners, hikers, skateboarders, and bikers. Please be courteous of others and slow down to keep everyone safe. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind while out enjoying the trails.

• Riders and passengers under 18 years of age must wear an approved, properly fitted helmet with a chinstrap.

• Front and rear lights are mandatory on bicycles if you ride at dusk, at night or in low-visibility conditions (rain, fog etc.)

• Use proper hand signals to indicate turns and lane changes.

• Ride at a controlled speed, especially when going downhill or around a blind corner.

• Stop at stop signs, red lights and always yield to pedestrians.

• Make sure to slow down when approaching curves, parks, playgrounds or in areas with impaired visibility.

• Use your bell/horn when approaching intersections, corners or trail users *Remember ALERT do not ALARM*

• Keep to the right of the trail and only pass others on the left.

• Ride predictably, in a straight line.

• Be alert! Children and animals especially can be unpredictable, it is up to you to remain cautious.

• Make sure your bike is in good working order (especially the brakes).
