Sports Event Hosting

The Ultimate Sports Destination

Red Deer is committed to sports, and it shows. We’ve hosted major national and international events, including world curling championships and national figure skating competitions. But no sport is too small – we have a variety of facilities to accommodate all. Red Deer’s many indoor and outdoor facilities are an ideal setting for any sporting event.

Fun Facts

Red Deer is home to:

  • 77 sports fields
  • 86 ball diamonds
  • 66 outdoor skating rinks
  • 52 tennis courts
  • 125 kms of trails within our City

A Winning Combination

A winning combination of great facilities, a central location, enthusiastic volunteers and abundant high quality accommodations makes the Red Deer Region an ideal host city for sporting events of all sizes.

In 2016, the Red Deer Rebels will host the 98th edition of the MasterCard Memorial Cup at Enmax Centrium in Westerner Park. This prestigious event will see the Rebels face off against the champions of the WHL, OHL, and QMJHL in a round robin junior ice hockey tournament that will determine the champion of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). Up to 500 local volunteers will work together to make sure the event goes off without a hitch.

The City has a track record for excellence in hosting major sporting events. Several national and international sporting events like the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the Brier, the world junior hockey championships and national figure skating events have previously taken place in this region.

In 2019, we’re gearing up to host our biggest sporting event ever – the Canada Winter Games. It takes a lot of work to host the largest multisport event in the nation. We’re preparing by upgrading our facilities and mobilizing a host of enthusiastic volunteers to ensure the 3600 athletes, their coaches, their families and their fans experience the best games ever.

An abundance of high quality sports venues makes it possible for Red deer to play host to so many prestigious events. “Our facilities are second to none in Central Alberta and we have the service to go with it,” says Jim White, Operations Manager for Westerner Park. “Red Deer’s convenient location, excellent facilities and competitive pricing bring sporting events to our region, but it’s our commitment to creating world class, big city events with small town hospitality that keeps event planners coming back.”

2019 Winter Games

The 2019 Games will be the largest event ever hosted in Red Deer and central Alberta and one of the largest events to be hosted in Alberta in over three decades, since the 1988 Calgary Olympics.

Featuring 19 sports, over 150 events and a major cultural festival, the 2019 Canada Winter Games will welcome up to 3,600 athletes, managers and coaches and more than 20,000 visitors.

The 2019 Canada Winter Games will leave a lasting legacy of new and enhanced sport facilities and volunteer and leadership development that will benefit athletes and the broader central Alberta community for years to come.

As we gear up for the Canada Winter Games in 2019, there’s one thing we know for sure: our winning combination is going to get even better.
