Tourism Talk Tuesdays with the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame

Get Interactive at the AB Sports Hall of Fame

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame is interactive and fun, exhibits are always changing with fresh history insight and there are plenty of activities and space for kids of all ages to play. “People often admit that they have forgotten about us,” says Tracey Kinsella, Executive Director. “Many people haven’t been here in so long, some as long as their school field trips or sports team parties back in their youth.” The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame & Museum first opened its doors in 2000, “a lot has happened and changed in 21 years!” jokes Kinsella. Read on to see what this Tourism Red Deer member has on the go and why you should add the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame to your
Red Deer bucket list.

What can guests (local or visiting) expect to experience?

Guests will be surprised by what they see when they enter our interactive museum. We have over 16,000 artifacts and nearly 7,000 square feet of space. We have a virtual multisport game for hockey, soccer, baseball, basketball and football lovers, a 200-metre wheelchair challenge, as well as a tread-wall climbing wall, bubble hockey and selfie station, just to name a few. You can also experience (virtually) the rush of going down a bobsled track with honoured member Lyndon Rush!

What makes you different, unique or stand out?

We are the only sports museum in the province dedicated to the heroes of sport that helped build our sporting community. We honour the builders and athletes that have gone on to build and represent our communities, province, and the country at all levels.

Why do you do what you do?

We believe in the importance of preserving the history of sport. Teaching our youth, the importance of healthy active living and learning through play.

What is new or upcoming?

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame is constantly evolving and working on creating new experiences for our guests. Our newly created birthday party room will make a child’s birthday extra special. Our feature exhibit “When Sports Stopped” features the many times over the past century that sport has been cancelled, COVID-19 is not the first time, a must see exhibit.

Whether this is your first time or a returning visit, be sure to make the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame part of your future plans; bring your kids, grandkids, or teams to share the love of sport and history that is available right here in Red Deer’s backyard.

Museums are scheduled to reopen with STEP 3 of the provincial reopening plan. Please check for updates before visiting.
