Enjoying the Outdoors: Part 4 – Snowshoeing in Red Deer

There was a time when snow-shoeing skills were a necessity for many people in Canada. This was particularly true for trappers, fur traders and anyone whose livelihood depended upon the ability to get around in deep snow. Today it is less of a necessity and more of a recreational endeavour for most people. Walker, runners and many outdoor enthusiasts turn to snowshoes during the winter as a means to challenge their routines, and to add a little adventure to their outdoor explorations.

Red Deer’s vast parks and trails system have many areas that can accommodate those with an adventurous lust to tread the path less travelled.

Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary is set on almost 122 hectares of land within the city of Red Deer and is one area where snowshoers love to explore. As a protected federal migratory bird sanctuary, skiing, jogging, cycling and pets are not allowed. Which in turn provides a more peaceful setting with ample opportunities to observe wildlife.

The Kerry Wood Nature conveniently provides snowshoe rentals and for little first-timers, they offer family snowshoeing adventure time, for practice at a leisurely pace. At present, their programs and rentals are suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, you can still enjoy their outdoor spaces with your own gear or a good pair of winter boots. Keep a close watch on their Facebook page for restriction changes and updates.

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame  is pleased to announce that they will be providing snowshoe rentals  for both adults and youth  at $5 an hour or $12 for all day .
