Cross-Country Skiing – Here in Red Deer, we are fortunate to have several spacious areas perfect for your skiing experience. River Bend Golf and Recreation Area has 19 km of groomed cross-country ski trails surrounded by the beautiful Red Deer River Valley with 4 km of lighted trails for evening runs and ample space for those who might prefer to snowshoe.

Ice Skating – is a fun family activity to do together and with a multitude of outdoor rinks available in and around Red Deer, you will have plenty of options. Bower Ponds has long been one of the most popular and scenic skating locations in the area and they also have skate rentals.

Skiing/Snowboarding Canyon Ski Resort is located just 10 minutes east of the city and is the largest non-mountain downhill ski resort in Alberta. The 28.6 hectare ski area has 20 runs, six lifts, lights for night skiing, a ski lodge, a large ski school, and equipment rentals.

Snowshoeing – Heritage Ranch, Great Chief Park, Kiwanis, and Barrett Park have beautiful trails for snowshoeing. For those wanting to try snowshoeing for the first time, Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary has 122 hectares of protected land; a refuge for native plants and animals. Snowshoe rentals can be found at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.

Fat Tire Winter Biking – This sport is getting more and more popular in Red Deer. The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame now has fat tire electric bike rentals available for people to experience Red Deer’s amazing winter trails.

Winter Walking – A winter walk throughout our many trails is the perfect way to spend some time alone, with your loved ones or your fur baby. Whether you head over to Michael O’Brien Wetlands picturesque walking loop or Three Mile Bend off-leash recreation area, it’s sure to be a lovely time. Tobogganing/Snowtubing – Experience the thrill of tobogganing down a snowy hill. Bower Ponds is a wonderful place to toboggan, then after warm up in the pavilion with hot chocolate. Canyon Ski Hill also has Snowtubing, check out their snow tube park with 6 Lanes and they even have fun glow lights for night tubing. Make sure you book online to secure your spot.

Ice Fishing – Get out and ice fish on some of our frozen lakes. You can find three great fishing spots right here in Red Deer. If you would rather have a trip outside of the city,  Sylvan Lake and Gull Lake are two great options for this winter sport. You can rent everything you need at places like Sun Sport Recreation Ltd.
