There are many ways to cool down this summer in Red Deer and surrounding area. Possibly the best way to shake the summer heat is to take a dip in an outdoor pool or bring the whole family to one of many spray parks.
Options in Red Deer include Discovery Canyon, Kin Kanyon, Blue Grass Sod Farm Central Spray and Play, and the outdoor pool at the Red Deer Recreation Centre.
Not far from Red Deer is the outdoor pool at the Abbey Centre in Blackfalds, the Sylvan Lake Aqua Splash and the Penhold Splash Park.
Discovery Canyon is now open for the season and is better than ever. Located at the Riverbend Golf and Recreation Area on the city’s northeast, Discovery Canyon features a fun tubing experience with a wading pool, beach area, and trickling rivulets all in natural river-fed bubbling pools of water.
Admission is free and tubes can be rented. The area includes picnic tables and concessions, and a new nature themed playground will open in the fall of 2017.
Kin Kanyon Spray Fountain
Tucked between 32nd St and Spruce Dr at 47th Avenue, the spray fountain at Kin Kanyon is a cozy area for parents and young ones to enjoy. It’s open all summer long when temperatures are warmer than 18 degrees Celsius and when winds are less than 20 km/hr.
It’s located right near the Kin Kanyon picnic area and playground which sets the scene for a full day of fun.
Blue Grass Sod Farm Central Spray and Play
This massive spray park is possibly the easiest way to cool down in Red Deer. It features dozens of fountains from all directions, perfect for children and parents of all ages. The park is conveniently located in downtown Red Deer, which means its near bus stops, linked to the Red Deer trail system, and offers loads of parking opportunities. There are also picnic tables and green space areas which the whole family can use to relax.
The park is open June 1st to September 4th from 11 am to 7 pm daily, weather permitting.
Recreation Centre Outdoor Pool
Attached to the Red Deer Recreation Centre on 47th Avenue inside Rotary Recreation Park, the 50 metre outdoor pool features 6 lanes of swimming, a waterslide, and 2 diving boards. There’s also a children’s area with a small slide, 3 spray features and a zero depth pool.
Overhanging trees provide some shade during parts of the really hot days, and there are also a number of lounging chairs and seating areas on the deck area.
The pool is open June 1st to September 4th.
Blackfalds Abbey Centre
Only 10 minutes north of Red Deer is the Abbey Centre in Blackfalds, which includes a newly built outdoor pool area. There are 2 waterslides, a children’s area, diving board, hot tub and a rock climbing wall. Families can also enjoy a patio area featuring beach chairs and tables.
The outdoor area is open May 19th to September 4th.
Sylvan Lake Aqua Splash
This newly opened park is one of a kind in Alberta. It is the first open water park in the province, located right off Lakeshore Dr. in Sylvan Lake.
The structure includes towers, slides, climbing walls, monkey swing bars, and many other obstacles fit for children of all ages. Life jackets are provided and lifeguards are on site to ensure everyone is safe.
Penhold Splash Park
This park is a great addition to Penhold. With a floor built from recycled materials, children and parents have an excellent spray park option just south of Red Deer. It’s located beside Jesse Duncan School and is open daily from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.
The season runs from the 2nd week of June through the September long weekend.
