What’s Happening in Red Deer this July & August

Summertime is always a happening place in Red Deer. In July we’ve been treated to Westerner Days and Canada’s Largest Gospel Music Celebration – two annual events that locals and guests look forward to each year. There are many more exciting events and happenings coming up this summer in Red Deer. Here’s a look at what’s upcoming:

Bard on the Bower

July 12th – 29th
The ever popular Bard on the Bower, Red Deer’s own Shakespeare in the Park, returns with three productions this month! At the Bower Ponds Stage, they will be performing Romeo and Juliet and Henry V, and new for this year will be a quickie production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream that will take place in local parks.

July 28th – 29th
CentreFest is Central Alberta’s largest outdoor street performer festival that welcomes all ages! Enjoy the diverse talents of performers from across the globe in downtown Red Deer. World class artists, musicians, performers, and street acts combine to create a fun and inspiring atmosphere that will entertain and amaze.

Rock ‘n Red Deer

July 30th – August 5th
Over 850 hot rods, customs, and classic 50s, 60s and 70s cruisers are on display to the public. Event highlights include day cruises, Friday night “Cruise In” in downtown Red Deer plus an outdoor stage with continuous live music all day Saturday and Sunday! Cruise to a different location each day and take in the festivities.

2018 Hlinka-Gretzky Cup

August 6th – 11th
Red Deer is set to welcome the world as it plays co-host to the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup with Edmonton. The Hlinka-Gretzky cup features some of the best under-18 men’s hockey players from around the world. Past Hlinka-Gretzky Cup alumni include Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin along with many other NHLers. Come see the stars before they’re famous. All of the Group B (USA, Russia, Finland, and Czech Republic) games will be played in Red Deer at the brand new Servus Arena from August 6th to 8th.

Exhibition games will also be played around Central Alberta (Sylvan Lake, Lacombe and Penhold) on August 4th.

Red Deer Ribfest 2018

August 17th – 19th
Three days of deliciousness. The second annual Red Deer Ribfest takes place this August at Rotary Park in Downtown Red Deer. We’re talking pork ribs, brisket, bbq chicken, pulled pork as well as an assortment of other yummy food. Enjoy the music and entertainment as you try the creations of award-winning “Ribbers” from across North America.

Fun happenings around Red Deer

  • The Red Deer Library will be hosting a number of events ranging from tech nights to How to Survive the Library: Hogwarts Style for youth. Check out their website for details on how you can join in the summer fun!
  • The Kerrywood Nature Centre and Fort Normandeau will be hosting various events this summer, including Meet the Critters, bannock making, adult yoga, and even gold panning! These are just a few of the fun things they have planned for the summer so visit their website for more ideas.
  • There is always something fun happening at The MAG, Red Deer’s Museum and Art Galley, and July is no exception. Whether it’s day camps for kids, watercolour, or a printmaking workshop, the MAG is sure to delight.
