10 Places to Celebrate Alberta Open Farm Days in Red Deer

Alberta Open Farm Days is a province-wide event that invites anyone and everyone to learn about rural life and experience local foods. This year’s sixth annual event will take place on August 18th – 19th, 2018. Here are some highlights in the Red Deer region:

Urban Farm Long Table Dinner

Westerner Park’s farm-to-table experience brings flavourful dishes created by Chef Jason Pederson using locally sourced ingredients and ingredients harvested from our Urban Farm site. Join the Innisfail community for a farm-to-plate gourmet dinner. Dishes showcasing our local growers will be created by Chef’s Matt Burton and Derek Layden and their culinary team.

Parkland Nurseries and Garden Centre

August 18th, 9:30 am – 4:00 pm

Kick-start your day at the Parkland Nursery and Garden Centre, where they will be hosting a pancake breakfast followed buy a ton of family friendly activities including a scavenger hunt and a petting zoo. The day features live music as well as veggie tastings from Edgar Farms.

Michener House Museum and Blacksmith Shop Museum

Learn to card, spin wool, and participate in their rainbow knitting bee at the Michener House Museum. At the Blacksmith Shop Museum, see smiths from across the region work together to make an ornamental garden trellis. Eagle Creek Farms

August 18th and 19th, 11:00 am – 5:00 pm

Mid August is the best time of year to visit our farm as our mazes have reached full height and full bloom. The U-pick gardens are bursting with fresh certified organic flowers and vegetables. During the Open Farm Days weekend visitors can enjoy free face painting from 12:30 – 3:30 and wagon ride tours of the gardens and newly established Hop Yard.

Troubled Monk

Located in Red Deer, Troubled Monk is a local microbrewery that features expertly crafted beverages. This weekend they will be offering free tours of their facilities!
Tours: 1:00, 3:00, and 5:00 pm on Saturday. 1:30 and 3:30 pm Sunday.

Blindman Brewing

Blindman Brewing is based in Lacombe and their founders have a range of backgrounds including brewing, farming, and engineering. Join them on Sunday August 19th for tours of their brewery.

Campfire Breakfast & Cattle Drive at Flying Cross Ranch

DnA Gardens

Join Dave and Arden Delidais for some farm fresh gelato featuring their very own black currants and cherries. They also have cherry pies and uber healthy cold pressed juices. DnA Gardens will be mosting tours of their many varieties of fruit trees and orchards and a general show-and-tell of combines and cherry pitting operation. There may even bee fresh squeezed apple juice, depending on the season!
