After a leisurely warm-up on Wolf Creek’s driving range and putting green, you tee off on your first of 36 legendary and tough links style holes. The wind is warm and gusty, the big blue sky is perfectly clear and the bright sun flickers on the long wet grass that frames the fairway. Now tell me, does it get any better than this?
17 scenic and laidback courses
Central Alberta has some of the best golf courses in the province – they are well-maintained, challenging and easily accessible from both our major cities. From championship courses to par three nine holes, there’s a course for every level – and every summer weekend. All 17 courses in Red Deer region are laidback, scenic and some of the best value in the province.
Double up in Lacombe
From your base in Red Deer, make the short half-hour drive to Lacombe and play both of the town’s wonderful courses. The Nursery Golf & Country Club was built on a 75-year-old tree nursery (hence the 40,000 trees) and has one of the longest holes in Canada (the eleventh is an amazing 782-yard stretch). And the Lacombe Golf & Country Club has exceptionally fast greens and is a favourite of locals (that’s how you know it’s good). It was also nominated in Score Magazine’s top ten best value courses – in other words, more money for a really big Alberta steak.
A short drive
From your Red Deer hotel, head to Gleniffer Lake Resort & Country Club in Spruce View (about 45 minutes SW) to practice your short game on their nine-hole executive par three course. Watch out for water on eight of the nine holes. Or half an hour SE, you’ll find Pine Lake’s Whispering Pines Golf & Country Club Resort and a championship 18-hole course. Fishermen – pack your rod for a turn around the lake and bring some walleye home to mama.
Right in the city
See if you can squeeze in just one more round before you head home at the River Bend Golf & Recreation Area, just minutes from downtown in the lush Red Deer River valley. This course hosted the 2009 and 2010 PGA of Alberta Championships and Discovery Canyon, the onsite outdoor water play area, will wear out the little ones for a nice quiet ride home.
Planning for a big group
Golf Central Alberta is a great resource for planning a big family get-together or office retreat. Choose a partnering hotel, like the swanky new 4-star Cambridge Hotel & Conference Centre, and your favourite course, like the beautifully treed Innisfail Golf Course – and the friendly behind-the-scenes agents will find you the best stay and play Alberta golf package.
You can also get great Alberta golf deals by booking directly with the hotel and course.
