Treasure hunt looks to spark local tourism

Deer Hunt

A local podcast has teamed up with Tourism Red Deer to help get friends and families out and about this summer.

The Oh, Deer… podcast, run by Red Deerians Ryan Lund, Kevin Walsh, Dustin Moore, and Ted Emmett, hosts the (Oh) Deer Hunt from July 11-17, a city-wide treasure hunt for Central Albertans of all ages.

“Kevin and I came up with the idea of doing some sort of treasure hunt around the city a few months ago,” said Lund, who, along with Walsh, has been the driving force behind the event. “Our podcast is really all about celebrating our community, and the (Oh) Deer Hunt is aimed at doing just that.”

Teams of 1-4 people can register to take part, free of charge, with the opportunity to win daily prizes from a number of local businesses and a final treasure chest with over $1,000 worth of prizes.

“We’ve already received tremendous support from several local businesses who want to be a part of the fun,” said Walsh, who is also the part-owner of Rob Rae Clothiers in Red Deer. “It’s just another way for us to remind everyone the importance of shopping local and supporting small businesses in Red Deer because those businesses are always stepping up to support the community.

Teams will follow daily clues that will take them to landmarks and businesses all over Red Deer but don’t necessarily have to take part every single day. The team that has unlocked the most clues by Saturday, July 17 will be crowned the winner and receive the final treasure chest.

“We are excited to partner up with the Oh, Deer guys,” said Rene Rondeau, Executive Director of Tourism Red Deer. “They came to us with this great idea that would spark engagement and provide experiences for locals and visitors alike to truly #explorereddeersbackyard. We encourage friends and families to make this a part of their summer plans. This is going to be a fun way to get out of the grey and experience the colours of Tourism Red Deer and have a chance to win prizes from some of our members!  It’s a win, win… so get registered soon.”

With over 20 teams already registered, Lund and Walsh say they hope to see close to 50 teams by the time the (Oh) Deer Hunt kicks off on July 11.
