It’s the largest non-mountain downhill ski resort in Alberta with a variety of packages and programs throughout the season. Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing are low-impact winter recreational activities suitable for individuals of all ages. As a bonus, equipment is relatively inexpensive and access to most facilities is free. Head to Kerry Wood Nature Centre and snowshoe through Waskasoo Park. You can rent snowshoes at Kerry Wood Nature Centre and head out on your own or join a guided tour at the nature centre. Even in winter, the sanctuary is remarkably alive and naturalist guides will help you discover animal tracks and other interesting signs of activity.
There are more than 30 km of groomed cross country ski trails right in the City of Red Deer. The majority of the city’s ski trails are centered in the Heritage Ranch/Great Chief Park area and the Riverbend Golf and Recreation Area, the premier cross country ski venue in Red Deer and Central Alberta.
Shorter trail loops are also provided at Barrett Park, the Red Deer College and a few school playgrounds. Other track set trails can be found around Central Alberta with the two most notable areas being the JJ Collett Natural Area near Lacombe and Jarvis Bay Provincial Park near Sylvan Lake. Red Deer’s Nordic ski community is very active and has events throughout the year.

The River Bend Golf and Recreation Area is a park node within the forested parkland and nestled next to the winding Red Deer River. In the winter, trails within the River Bend Golf and Recreation Area are groomed for both classic and skate skiing, and other multi-use activities including winter biking, snowshoeing and walking.
