The Town of Sylvan Lake is taking their annual Canada Day celebrations online in 2020.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Town has had to cancel annual events such as the fireworks show and other elements that traditionally welcome thousands of visitors to the Lake each year.
As communities look to take Canada's birthday celebrations online, Sylvan Lakers will also be able to join in the celebration through an event the Recreation and Culture Facebook page. Throughout Wednesday July 1st, the Town will be celebrating through a variety of themes; education, music, art and more. The proposed list of events for 2020 include:

True North Tunes
- Learn about the history of Canada, Sylvan Lake and the elements of our country and community that make it a wonderful place to live and call home. National and local facts and stories will be shared throughout the day, featuring information, pictures and video to showcase the diversity and history of our great nation including aboriginal, black and women's history in Canada
Show Us Your Colours*
Canada is rich with musical icons spanning a multitude of genres, generations and formats. Throughout the day, we’ll share music from a variety of homegrown performers from across the country, celebrating and singing along with some Canadian music superstars. Sylvan Lake has also provided some incredible local artists to the Canadian music scene, which will also be showcased
Children's Chalk Art*
- Share photos of you, your friends and your loved ones safely enjoying Canada Day together in your best ‘red and white’ outfits or waving that beloved maple leaf. Everyone who shares a photo will be entered into a draw for a TOSL prize pack, including a one-month membership to the NexSource Centre
Canadian Window Dressing*
- Creativity and the arts are a foundation of what makes Canada the great nation it is today. Grab some chalk and create a sidewalk masterpiece. Share a photo of your best ‘Canadian Art’ in celebration of Canada Day, and the first 100 children to share photos will receive a Town of Sylvan Lake sandbucket, sunglasses and small candy treat! (Prizes to be picked up at NexSource Centre upon re-opening)
Transform your window into a giant canvas, right in the comfort of your own home. Create a Canadian landscape with window paint, construction paper, or any other art supplies to show your love for Canada. Design your window, snap a photo and share it on the event page. One lucky artist will win a $100 gift card to any local Sylvan Lake business of their choosing! (Gift card cannot be redeemed for alcohol/tobacco/cannabis/lottery tickets)

Canada is known for it’s incredible poutine dishes, but there are so many other ways to enjoy Canadian cuisine. Share your ‘Canadian’ recipes with the community. Have a homemade appetizer, entrée or dessert that you feel more people should enjoy and share the ingredients and directions with your fellow Lakers. One lucky contributor will be awared with a $100 gift card to a Sylvan Lake restaurant of their choice
